What does this company's remote policy actually mean?

Remote-first, remote-friendly, hybrid, distributed. Job ads use them interchangeably and they commit the employer to four different things. Paste the posting and see which words it chose.

Runs in your browser. The text you paste is never sent anywhere.

The distinction that costs people a move

Remote-first describes a company whose processes assume nobody is in a room together — decisions get written down because they have to be. Remote-friendly describes an office-centred company that permits remote work, and a permission is a thing that can be withdrawn. Distributed describes where people happen to sit and promises nothing at all.

What it is not:a judgement about the employer, and not a report on how the policy is applied in practice. It reads the words in the text you pasted. A company can write “remote-first” and run standups that assume a shared timezone — the posting will not tell you that, and neither will this.
